Competing Explanations for Danish Prosperity

Abstract

In this chapter, a number of suggested explanations for Danish prosperity and institutional arrangements are reviewed. While a number of these are sparingly engaged throughout the book, this chapter attempts to present them and their evidence directly. The chapter discusses the tension between the consensus explanation, the common people hypothesis, and the potentially lost opportunity for increased wealth generation. From here, we move on to discuss the surprisingly high level of trust and low level of observed corruption’s role and the relation to the homogenic populace. I end by discussing the role of religion and a Romerian and innovistic explanation for Danish prosperity.
