Abstract

The nature of documentary sources is discussed, together with specific instances of their complex history of loss and survival. The difficulty of interpreting large collections of estate archives is mentioned and the discovery of the importance of farm record books is featured prominently. The unexpected value of other unconsidered sources, such as marginalia in botanical and agricultural works, is also considered.
