Abstract

After having discussed the economic and political development of northern Cyprus in post-1974 period, Ekici concludes with a personalized criticism of the political-economic history of the north, identifying the self-serving politics, poor governance and lack of accountability amongst key actors. In addition to the politicians, though, he argues that the people and the Turkish governments have been complicit in making this discordant polity. Even the glimmer of new promise offered prior to the 2018 elections, Ekici suggests a return to the familiar routines of clientelism and rentierism in a neo-colonial state offering little prospect for the future of Turkish Cypriots on the island.
