Is there a Gender Gap in Accessing Finance in Rwanda?

Abstract

Availability and accessibility to finance is important for gender equality and economic growth. Lack of gender-inclusive finance helps in expanding existing gender inequalities in society and helps in creating gender gaps in economic development. Education, income, employment, and household status determine the level of access to finance in Rwanda. This chapter outlines the nature and character of gender gaps in terms of access to finance and financial services in Rwanda. The chapter argues that there is a strong relationship between lack of access to finance and gender inequality in Rwanda. It seeks to identify gendered finance, its causes and consequences and argues for gender-inclusive finance in Rwanda.
