Abstract

In 1962, Hayek returned to Europe from Chicago, to the University of Freiburg in what was then West Germany. Hayek had been happy in Chicago. He considered it one of the leading universities in the world. In an impromptu talk on leaving the university, he called it a “very great place.” He enjoyed its intellectual diversity beyond the social sciences, which he did not experience at the London School of Economics (though in 1962 he did consider that the LSE “was and probably still is preeminent in the world” in the social sciences).
