Abstract

Operational performance improvement programmes have earned a bad reputation. They tend to fail. Many deliver temporary gains, but few succeed in sustaining the early benefits, and fewer still manage to establish a genuine culture of continuous improvement. In most cases, operational performance either slips back to its old level or stagnates within a year. The latest initiative is soon consigned to history, joining a host of previous efforts in the company archives.
