Abstract

Poland is the second largest country in Central Europe, after Russia. The country occupies an area roughly the size of Great Britain and Ireland combined. It is also the most densely populated country in Eastern Europe and constitutes more or less the geographic centre of Europe. Warsaw, the capital is also the largest city with approximately 1,643,000 inhabitants. Other large cities include Lodz (784,000 inhabitants), Krakow (734,000), Wroclaw (633,000), Poznan (581,000), Gdansk (457,000), Szczecin (417,000), Lublin (354,000), and Katowice (336,000), and Bydgoszcz (385,000). The total population of Poland is 38.6 million.
