Assignments Outside New York

In: Sir Hans Singer

Author

Listed:
  • D. John Shaw

Abstract

While engaged in the activities of the UN in New York described above, Singer also carried out a number of assignments in developing countries. These included: training programmes in development planning for government staff in developing countries; working with the UN Economic Commissions for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and for Asia in Bangkok, Thailand; participating in UN missions to developing countries, including Brazil, the Philippines, Sudan, Thailand and Turkey; and being associated with the development of several UN institutions and activities. Being a UN official, Singer was not allowed to accept gifts from governments as a token of their appreciation of his work. This proved to be fortuitous on one occasion when he was offered the decoration of the ‘Order of the White Elephant, Second Class’, which he graciously declined.
