Abstract

On 11 December 2001 China became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). China promised to cut import taxes within five years. On 1 July 2006 the automobile tax, for example, will decrease to 25 per cent from the current 30±80 per cent. In January 2002 the prices of imported products such as automobiles and agricultural products decreased dramatically.
