Abstract

The era of cybercash is about to begin. We have come to this threshold from two different directions. One has been the irresistible spread of computer and communication technologies in banking which has habituated us to the use of plastic cards, automated teller machines, point-of-sale terminals, electronic fund transfers and access devices such as personal computers and cell phones — the components of a sociotechnological infrastructure for cybercash. The other direction is the internet whose most dynamic application, e-commerce, demands an online-payments system for its full development.
