Abstract

Entering the Chinese market as a foreign company is generally described as a ‘challenging process’, a phrase most businesspeople (whether Asian or Western) with any experience of China would regard as a massive understatement. The first Western companies entered China as early as 1979 when Deng Xiaoping announced the famous ‘Open Door’ policy, and these brave pioneers were followed by successive waves of optimistic investors. Mesmerised by the sheer size of the market and the increasing wealth of China’s urban middle class, they all made major commitments in the hope of reaping massive gains. Unfortunately, as the full extent of the obstacle course between themselves and any profits became clear, their hopes gave way to disillusionment. So far, investing in China has been very much a game of two halves; first find your partner, and then find your market.
