The Rise of China as an Economic Power: Implications for Asia and Japan

Abstract

The emergence of China as an economic power is having a strong influence on other Asian economies. China is seen as a promising market and destination for foreign direct investment (FDI), on the one hand, and as a competitor in export markets, on the other. As a general rule, higher income countries with trade structures complementary to that of China are likely to benefit, while lower income countries that compete with China are likely to be hurt.
