People in Search of Work: Albanian Migrants in Greece

Abstract

The last decade of the twentieth century witnessed profound changes in the political and economic landscape of Europe. Between 1989 and 1991 the states of Eastern Europe, which had previously been run according to the principles of communism and central economic planning, embarked upon a process of reform which would see them establish Western-style democratic political systems and market-orientated economic systems. Under the old communist system citizens of most East European states were prevented from travelling to Western Europe, therefore migration flows between Eastern and Western Europe before 1989 were minimal.
