Conclusions and Wider Implications for Developing Countries

Abstract

The last two chapters, 5 and 6, compared the two empirical studies in considerable detail to yield a detailed analysis, respectively, of the process of acquisition of technological competencies and the influence of China’s centrally planned economic system and its transition. This final chapter seeks to present the overarching conclusions of this study, linking the empirical research findings to the theoretical framework and concerns of the research. It further examines how relevant these findings are to the main policy issues and concerns of developing countries, especially for developing countries which have been socialist states. It revisits discussions about whether the resort to exogenous technologies will involve development or dependency (and considers the extent to which the optimistic findings about the prospects fordeveloping countries may be specific to China and/or the particular PDSS technology).
