Abstract

In this chapter we describe our emerging approach to learning (learning ecology), provide examples of teaching/learning in tertiary and community settings that illustrate this approach, and discuss its implications for transformative learning relevant to raising the level of ecological consciousness. We believe that although transformative learning that expands consciousness in general will also be likely to raise ecological consciousness, this will be much more effectively achieved if our particular approaches to teaching/ learning are informed by ecology and our deepest and most profound understandings of nature. Such understanding has radical (root-level) implications for both the frameworks that are used to design educational programs, and also the content of the learning materials and experiences.
