Abstract

Of all the pursuits in our modern, technologically advanced Western cultures, pursuing wisdom has not been one of them. In fact, (as seen in the Introduction) the present technological era [in which everything (including human beings) is compared to machines] effectively undermines the credibility of a concept like wisdom (Marcel, 1955). It is possible, however, that a clearer understanding of wisdom’s role in individual and communal life has the potential to enhance survival, stimulate growth, and deepen human experience (Bleyl, 2000). Anciently, wisdom held a universally important and significant role in the development of individuals as well as in maintaining the healthy continuance of communities (Assmannn, 1994). Moreover, even today in most non-Western societies throughout the world, those people who are considered “wise”—the sages, elders, shaman, medicine men and women, and so on—are highly respected and revered.
