Introduction: Imports and Protection

In: Import Propensities of Industrialized Countries

Abstract

This book compares per capita levels of imports for the advanced developed countries; thus, it focuses on actual trade flows. But just as important as the imports that actually entered into the markets of the industrialized countries have been those imports that have not been allowed into those same markets because of the protectionist practices in place. International trade patterns, as a consequence, have been affected by imports that did not occur just as they have been by the actual imports that have been present. Thus, the emphasis in the chapters to follow will be both on the actual per capita imports in the aggregate and for selected product categories that were present and on the “missing” imports as well.
