Abstract

The 1993 document1 on African strategies for the Implementation of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, UNCED, Agenda 21, underlines seven priority areas: (a) achievement of food self-sufficiency and food security; (b) managing demographic change and population pressures; (c) ensuring efficient and equitable use of water resources; (d) securing greater energy self-sufficiency; (e) optimizing environmentally clean industrial production; (f) management of species and ecosystems; and (g) preventing and reversing desertification.
