Abstract

It has often been said that Africa is a continent in crisis. Although there are some areas of relative prosperity based on massive export of non-renewable primary resources, most of the continent is suffering from a continual drain on, and degradation of its natural resources — plant cover, soils, animal resources and climate. This state of affairs had lead to the poverty of the African people and the lowering of their quality of life (Timberlake 1985).
