Banking Supervision: Who is Doing What?

Abstract

In the Federal Republic of Germany, as in virtually every other country with a banking system organised along free-market lines, the banking system is subject to special government regulation and supervision, for credit institutions occupy a special position within the economy as reservoirs of capital, as suppliers of credit to enterprises, households and public authorities and as agencies of monetary policy.
