Abstract

Switzerland has a reputation as a prosperous country with few social problems. Although this image is still adequate compared to most other countries, it is not as immaculate as it used to be. For example, economic growth has been below the OECD average for a number of years. Unemployment has risen from under 1 per cent to over 4 per cent and has remained there for several years with no substantial improvement being predicted by any of the nationwide forecasting models. In addition, there is a widespread belief that poverty has risen since the early 1980s and that more and more families are facing problems making ends meet.
