Features and Recent Developments of Cultural Heritage Policy in Japan

In: Economic Perspectives on Cultural Heritage

Abstract

In carrying out this exercise, I have been greatly influenced by the works of two illustrious scholars, one being an economist and the other an art historian. First of all my stimulation originates from my encounter with the work of Sir Alan Peacock, presented at the Symposium (Peacock, in this volume). Because I am concerned with the Japanese cultural heritage, I have also been stimulated by the work of the late Yukio Yashiro (Yashiro, 1987). As it appears that the name of Yashiro is less familiar to Western readers, I shall take the opportunity to briefly introduce Yashiro.
