Abstract

‘You get a little bit of satisfaction from employing people, providing jobs for people and designing new products and finding people want to buy it … it would be nice to think that you could make a lot of money out of it as well, but that’s not so important — that would be the icing on the cake … your own business ultimately gives the freedom, but you work a damn sight harder — I’ve never worked so hard in my life than for the last three years. It’s very hard but it gives you the illusion that you have some control over what you are doing, and the long term objective is that I’ve got things that I would like to do, and working for myself gives me the right to choose when I do it.’ — technology-based owner manager (Jones-Evans, 1992)
