Abstract

A concern for human well-being was one of the motivations behind the new system of governance for international finance established at Bretton Woods. In the Articles of Agreement of the IMF and World Bank, that concern was articulated in terms of maintaining high levels of employment and prosperity and raising the standard of living and the conditions of labour.
