Abstract

The everyday approach to economic and social issues, whether one is concerned with political ideas or pragmatically with problem solving, is to consider a string of phenomena as they do function or should function. Politicians, economists, and the citizenry at large will rarely look beyond to enquire what they are, or why they are. In this chapter we want to ask such questions; notably about interpersonal drives and especially about altruism.1 What are the latter’s intrinsic dynamics? How does altruism relate to civic generosity and to self-interest? What is the potential for enhancement of its role in civic behaviour — is enhancement possible?
