International Environmental Standards: Their Role in the Mutual Recognition of Eco-Labelling Schemes

In: Eco-Labelling and International Trade

Abstract

Eco-labelling schemes, as economic instruments aimed at environmental improvement, are increasingly being used in order to generate consumer preference for environmentally friendly products. The proliferation of eco-labelling schemes has fostered concerns in both developed and developing counties over the potential effects of such schemes on international trade and market access, due in part to the tendency of eco-labelling schemes to focus on domestic products and domestic environmental standards.
