Planning Development Through Urbanization in Nigeria

Abstract

In 1950, urban areas contained only 29 per cent of the world’s population. It is estimated that, by the year 2000, over 50 per cent of the world’s population will reside in cities. A large proportion of this urban population growth will occur in cities in developing countries. In 1950, while developing countries were only 16.9 per cent urban, by 1990 this had risen to 34 per cent, and by 2025 it is projected to be 57 per cent.1
