Abstract

Japanese manufacturing investment has had a relatively long history in Wales, with pathfinder firms such as Sony and Matsushita entering the region during the mid-1970s. As a result of a series of expansions, and the entry of second-wave component manufacturing firms, the Japanese presence in Wales has increased dramatically and in 1994 employed an estimated 15 000 people in 33 manufacturing companies. Around a quarter of Japanese transplant manufacturing sector (TMS) employment in the UK is now in Wales. The longevity and size of the Japanese TMS in Wales provide ample material for a consideration of contribution to the local economy and the extent to which the presence of such investment corresponds to regional economic needs.
