Abstract

Of the constituent republics of the former Soviet Union, Kazakhstan was one of the last to proclaim its independence (mid-December 1991), when it became clear that the USSR de facto no longer existed. Kazakhstan has been one of the most active member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), advocating closer economic co-operation and political co-ondination.
