Malaysia’s Economic Performance: An Overview

Abstract

In 1993, Malaysia’s GDP was estimated to be around RM163 billion or approximately US$65 billion. In terms of GNP per capita Malaysia already surpassed US$3000 by 1993. This puts Malaysia among the more successful developing economies, and by the World Bank standards, Malaysia is already into the upper-middle-income group of countries and has joined a newly industrialising economy status (World Bank, 1993). The size of its GDP is about the same as countries like Greece, Ireland and New Zealand and larger than the more populated countries like the Philippines, Egypt, Pakistan and Colombia.
