Abstract

In the introductory chapter, Harvey alluded to the pre-eminence of structural adjustment programmes in sub-Saharan Africa during the 1980s. In these orthodox adjustment programmes, the labour market is assigned a central role. This is so ‘...since the achievement of a real devaluation demands both real wage flexibility and intersectoral labour mobility’ (Fallon and Riveros, 1989: 1).
