Japanese FDI and Economic Policy

Abstract

Direct investment abroad by Japan is a relatively new phenomenon but it is attracting much attention from the rest of the world. Foreign direct investment (FDI), which is influenced by strategic decisions made by companies, is sensitive to macroeconomic circumstances abroad and is subject to greater risk than is domestic investment. FDI can exert a considerable influence on both the investor and the recipient, and its policy implications are significant.
