Abstract

What does political economy for socialism mean for those of us who live in capitalist countries? During the cold war era, socialism used to signify not only the political movement and the set of ideas which envisaged a new social order belonging to working people, but also a concrete model of the planned economy to be found in the actually existing socialist countries. It was generally believed that the Soviet socio-economic order represented an advanced model of scientific socialism, or Marxism in practice, as its leaders asserted. Scientific socialism was believed to be a workers’ state without social oppression and discrimination of working people, and immune from the economic crises and stagnations which ravage economic life in capitalism.
