Abstract

Presswork is a key sector in the automotive industry. The work consists of the pressing or stamping of sheet metal (normally mild steel) to form panels which are then assembled (normally spot-welded) to create the basic body shell and structure. There are also a large number of smaller pressings used as brackets or stiffeners on the body shell, as well as embodied in other components, including brakes, engine components, seats, window mechanisms, and controls. It has always been considered a core activity by the vast majority of automotive assemblers — only low-volume firms such as Rolls-Royce and Lotus dó not undertake their own presswork. However, as we shall discuss below, there has also been a long tradition of outsourcing various types of presswork and, more recently, the assemblers have been reappraising their levels of vertical integration in presswork in the light of new technology and the demands for leaner production structures.
