Abstract

This book has attempted to test the hypothesis that changes in the techno-economic paradigm create opportunities for the rise of new firms, industries and countries to technological leadership. The case-study showing how the Japanese system of innovation has responded to the development of advanced materials (AMs) was used to elaborate this hypothesis. Moreover, two related assumptions were also investigated. First that the advanced materials revolution is associated with the recent changes in the techno-economic paradigm. The second assumption examined was whether Japan, a very successful country in adapting its national system to information technology, would also be strongly placed to exploit advanced materials technologies. Even if both assumptions imply one connected argument, the main points discussed throughout the book are organised in this concluding chapter in two main parts. The first concentrates on reviewing the findings related to the arguments put forward in the 1980s concerning the advanced materials revolution, while the second deals with the case-study of how Japan has emerged as the leader in advanced materials and the reasons for the Japanese success.
