Abstract

This second chapter of the study undertakes a comparative analysis of entry strategies of European banks into insurance, placing the focus of the analysis on the choice of the entry vehi-cle and examining in the course of the chapter the most impor-tant examples of European banks which have entered insurance. The analysis is classified into de novo entries, co-operative dis-tribution alliances, joint ventures and mergers or acquisitions and it focuses on the following key questions: • Can common patterns be identified which characterise each entry strategy? • Does the choice of the entry vehicle matter for the overall success of the entry vehicle? • If so, does any entry vehicle appear to be more successful than its alternatives? • How can the theoretical and empirical management litera-ture help to explain the relative success of different entry ve-hides? • What other key factors for successfully entering insurance are relevant?
