An Intertemporal Interpretation of the US Current Account Deficit

Abstract

During the last decade the huge current account deficits, averaging over $100 billion, and the corresponding net capital inflows have reduced the US foreign investment position steadily, turning the United States into a net foreign debtor in 1985.
