Cross-National Patterns of Retirement and Poverty among Men and Women in the Mid 1980s: Full Stop or Gradual Withdrawal?

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to explore patterns of retirement across seven different nations during the mid 1980s. In so doing, we hope to answer the following questions: How does one measure retirement? Does retirement differ systematically between women and men? Does work stoppage mean receipt of retirement income, and vice versa? Does retirement mean impoverishment? Finally, does retirement mean full work stoppage or a more gradual withdrawal from the labour market?
