Abstract

Hungary is an open economy, where the foreign trade balance has had a significant influence in guiding macroeconomic processes. This function has been satisfactorily performed for decades by using a methodology continually adjusted to changing circumstances. Debts accumulated before 1973 did not exceed 1 billion dollars.
