Abstract

Hungary has been the most successful East European country in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), with $13 billion or about 40 per cent of the total cumulative capital invested in the area at the end of 1995. In 1992–95 it was among the first five net capital importing countries in the world per capita. This uniquely high degree of foreign penetration, when compared to the other transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe, is the result of specific economic policy features.
