Abstract

We begin our discussion of the principal parts of our behavioural model with an examination of the personal characteristics of the individual, the basic unit of our analysis. These personal characteristics play a central role in determining individual behaviour in a wide variety of settings, including many which are of interest to economists. I shall be concentrating principally on motivation, a large and diverse subject area in psychology, and one within which divergences of view still persist. Many of the differences in viewpoint may be more apparent than real, however, awaiting only the emergence of a unifying structure which will help resolve most of the differences. Psychology, like the other social sciences, is still at a relatively early stage of development, and it seems to be the case that progress in some areas awaits prior advances in allied subjects.
