The Determination of the External Debt of Honduras

In: Economic Maladjustment in Central America

Abstract

In recent years much attention has been given to the causes of the debt crisis in developing countries. Studies performed have sought to identify the economic variables having an influence on debt growth or impeding its servicing. In addition, increasing attention has been paid to the establishment of financial mechanisms to allow the solution of problems related to large external borrowing. A question arising in analysing the literature is whether the proposed models and schemes are applicable to any developing country. Likewise, a doubt arises as to the possibility for a given country to overcome its indebtedness problems on the basis of a programme of local efforts, independently of the behaviour of the international economy.
