Abstract

After 1961 South African agriculture was transformed and the country experienced a far-reaching agricultural revolution. Its roots go far back, but it only became general in this period, after changes had been initiated across a broad front in the 1950s. Today, as a result, South African farmers are conspicuously affluent. Roosevelt’s New Deal called for a chicken in every pot on Sunday; South Africa’s agricultural revolution has resulted in a Mercedes on many farms. And this prosperity is not confined to one area of the country. It is perhaps most obvious in the maize triangle of the highveld, but it may also be seen among the wine and wheat growers of the Western Cape, the mixed farming regions of the Eastern Cape, the Natal Midlands, the sugar regions of Natal and the semi-tropical fruit region of the Eastern Transvaal. New farm buildings, new farm machinery and new Mercedes automobiles are conspicuous features of the modern South African countryside.
