The Inflation Enigma

Abstract

During the 1970s and 1980s a number of national economies slipped into chronic inflation at double- and triple-digit annual rates. Such Latin American nations as Argentina, Brazil, and Peru have had particularly persistent problems, but many nations—Israel and Yugoslavia, for example—have also endured severe inflation over extended periods. At this writing, inflation is likely to remain a problem in many nations for some years to come. This book aims to elucidate the economic processes that sustain chronic high inflation, and to explain why it has proven so stubbornly resistant to both “orthodox” and “heterodox” stabilization approaches.
