Abstract

In the past three decades nuclear power has emerged as a major source of electrical power worldwide. In early days it was thought ‘that nuclear power would provide electricity too cheap to meter. However, today such thoughts have all but vanished. In 1973 it was projected that world nuclear power capacity would be 1600GW(e) by 1990, but by 1982 projections had been reduced to 430GW(e). Even the latest estimates are too high because, by the end of 1986, 397 nuclear reactors operating in twenty-six countries only produced 274GWe; thirty-eight of these units were located in ten developing countries, having a production capacity of 19GWe.
