Production Relocation: An Electronics Multinational in France and Brazil

Abstract

The internationalisation of production has, from the point of view of multinationals, been determined by economic factors: profitability, costs, differences in productivity (Michalet, 1979). But from the point of view of trade unions, the social consequences are a matter of concern. Trade unions have frequently connected the creation of employment at the periphery with the decline in employment at the centre. However, the relation between the two is not a mechanical one. In order to understand the forces at work one must study separately the change in employment in the two locations at the level of the plant, in the context of the technology and personnel management strategies in use.
