Abstract

The approach of this book has intentionally diverged from the orthodox assumption that industrial conflict is by definition a ‘social problem’, and that its analysis and interpretation must be geared to the elimination, or at least the diminution, of its ‘disruptive’ effects. Instead, Eldridge’s dictum has been accepted: ‘in sociology, the sources of conflict and co-operation, order and instability must have an equally valid claim to problem status’ (1968:22).
