Abstract

A civilized society combines self-interest and civic values so that its citizens may enjoy the benefits of each. In the public debate of the last twenty years, self-interest and civic values have been offered as alternative guiding principles for the government of America. Conservatives have pursued prosperity through the free market, while liberals have sought justice in community. One camp strives for competitiveness, while the other focuses on excellence. The tragedy is that self-interest and civic values are both part of our national character.
