Abstract

In many ways, opportunities for women to reach the upper echelons of business have never seemed so bleak. Unemployment has had an adverse impact upon women and the number of registered unemployed women has doubled in the past five years, growing from 461 000 in 1980 to 928 000 in 1984. Of employed women, 40 per cent are engaged in part-time work, which means in most cases that they have little job security, low wages and poor career prospects. Increasingly, as companies try to cut costs, these women are viewed as a disposable reserve supply.
