Abstract

Contemporary history is as difficult as it is exciting. When memory is fresh, the mind gets cluttered with details and it becomes difficult to see the wood for the trees. But the facts or the details are well-known anyway; and what matters is whether they reveal an emerging pattern or throw some light on the underlying forces at work. Accordingly, this discussion paper does not attempt a historical narrative of what happened to free enterprise in India in the Nehru era. It takes the factual background for granted and attempts instead to assert certain conclusions as a basis for discussion.
